Instead of the leg tapering into a slim ankle, it continues in diameter, and there’s little distinction between where the leg ends and the ankle starts. **What causes them?** When fat cells in the ankle area become engorged, there’s little room for them to expand, causing the ankles to appear swollen and fat, also known as cankles. But fat is not always the cause of them; muscle, edema, or swelling can all contribute. Genetic makeup also plays a role in fat that accumulates toward the lower end of the leg. Other cankle-causing factors include pregnancy (a lot of water is retained in the lower legs, ankles and feet), inflammation of the lymphatic system and kidney problems. **How do you fix them?** Cankles can be treated surgically with liposuction in the inner and outer portion of the ankle. Although it’s a rare area to treat, it’s also a tricky one because of the amount of nerves that live at the base of the leg. The condition can be the result of hormonal changes, heredity, obesity, or the use of certain drugs. [Gynecomastia](https://blog.silktouchmedspa.com/blog/) can cause emotional discomfort and impair your self confidence. Some men may even avoid certain physical activities and intimacy simply to hide their condition. She visited our facility for ankle/calf liposuction, a popular procedure for many of our out-of-state and international clients. ***Fanny wrote a blog for us, so we want to share her Transformation in her owns words! Enjoy!*** ***![ankle lipo before and after pics](https://blog.silktouchmedspa.com/hs-fs/file-790217595-jpg/images/933523-1290434.jpg)*** ### ***BEFORE*** ***My Experience:*** I have now successfully gone from heavy, chubby ankles and calves to average/slim ones. I have wanted to do this for at least 8 years, since having cankles have made me way too self-conscious about my looks. I was always embarrassed about showing my legs, which you cannot avoid during the summer period. You are pretty far out, if you hate an entire (otherwise lovely) season just because of some misplaced body fat, which I literally did. I have always been told by my mom to love my self just the way I am, and TRUST me; I have really tried to accept my cankles and be self-confident about showing my legs. But I just could not stop feeling embarrassed about them, avoiding a lot of clothes and specific positions. Therefore, even though the healing is tough, I am now absolutely thrilled to be rid of them!! Overall I would say, girls, if you are in doubt about having this procedure done, really try to work on your mind before doing this. We can always find minor flaws about ourselves, and cosmetic procedures can easily become a slippery slope towards obsession with unrealistic perfection. With that said, if you are 100% sure that you cannot accept your cankles, I am so glad to tell you that you can now actually have them removed!! :D  I am from Denmark and there I have found no doctors who had experience with lipo on the lower legs. I could not find a good doctor to do this in other European countries either, except for the UK, but he was both rude and impatient with me and the cost of the procedure alone was the same as all my expenses in the US. I googled before and after pictures of liposuction on the lower legs and found amazing pictures done at Silk Touch Med Spa, Idaho, and would be glad just to get half of that result. So I wrote to their patient coordinator Donna, who answered all my many questions and arranged for me to come there, booking the hotel, ordering my meds and stockings and was really cool about the payment process. I took the big step and went on the long trip from Denmark to the states, and Dr. Kerr, his wife Susie and their sweet family have just been absolutely wonderful to me!! They were so caring, including and loving that I felt like I was being taken care of by my own family! This was absolutely vital for me, as I initially felt confused, alone and scared. Botox is one of our most popular nonsurgical treatments that smoothes facial lines and wrinkles to reduce the signs of aging. For those hoping to stop wrinkles before they start, preventative Botox is an increasingly popular treatment to consider. Botox is an injection that relaxes muscles just enough to smooth wrinkles that appear on the forehead and at the corners of the eyes (“crows feet”). Other nonsurgical approaches like wearing sunscreen and using anti-aging skin care products can help slow the hands of time at a topical level, while Botox is a deeper, more noticeable solution with natural looking results. Some are wary of [preventative Botox](http://www.silktouchmedspa.com/botox-boise-eagle-idaho) because their lines are minimal or nonexistent, but beginning treatments at an earlier age can relax muscles and prevent lines from deepening. Take a look at this recent study below. ## A STUDY IN WRINKLE PREVENTION ![BotoxPrevention](https://blog.silktouchmedspa.com/hs-fs/file-1859434997-png/images/botoxprevention.png?width=498&height=534&name=botoxprevention.png)The fore-mentioned study followed identical twin sisters for 13 years. One twin received BOTOX in the forehead, and in the region above the nose and between the eyebrows (approximately 2 to 3 times each year over the past 13 years) and in the crow’s feet (twice in past 2 years). Her twin received BOTOX only twice (in the forehead, and in the region above the nose and between the eyebrows, 3 and 7 years ago). ## RESULTS **Imprinted forehead lines and lines between the eyebrows were not evident in the regularly treated twin but were evident in the minimally treated twin.** Crow’s feet were less noticeable when the regularly treated twin smiled (even at 7 months after treatment) than when the minimally treated twin smiled. Untreated facial areas (eg, nasolabial folds) showed comparable aging in both twins. Neither twin experienced adverse effects. ## CONCLUSIONS “Long-term treatment with BOTOX can prevent the development of imprinted facial lines that are visible at rest. BOTOX treatment can also reduce crow’s feet. Treatment is well tolerated, with no adverse events reported during 13 years of regular treatment in this study.”1 # How much Botox do you need for “preventative reasons?” If you’re getting Botox treatments for preventative reasons it’s more individual dependent. Botox works by blocking muscle movement. To relax someone’s muscle takes the same amount at age 20 or age 50.
