In the 1990’s, it was discovered that patients receiving BOTOX® for cosmetic reasons reported less frequent migraine headaches. Approximately 28 million Americans suffer from Migraine headaches, headaches that can be so severe that sufferers often describe them as blinding or paralyzing.
In studies, it has been found that 80 percent of migraine patients who underwent BOTOX® injections experienced migraine relief for four to six months. Studies also found that patients injected at various sites sometimes experienced immediate relief from migraines.
Doctors believe that the mechanism behind the BOTOX® migraine relief is that, in addition to relaxing muscles, the drug may interfere with the transmission of nerve pain signals.
Professor Carole Longson, director of the Health Technology Evaluation Centre at NICE, commented earlier in May on the studies, "Chronic migraines are extremely debilitating and can significantly affect a person's quality of life. We are pleased that the committee has been able to recommend BOTOX® as a preventative therapy for those adults whose headaches have not improved despite trying at least three other medications and whose headaches are not caused by medication overuse."
Do you suffer from migraine headaches? A friend of ours has suffered from migraines since early in her teens, and though she doesn’t need BOTOX® for appearance reasons is considering getting it for the migraine relief. What are your thoughts?

The other day my friend came to me for advice. “ I have an embarrassing problem”, she said. She then explained to me that lately, she could not control how much she sweats. It had gotten to the point where to she was afraid to wear anything but black, in fear that she would raise her arms and show giant sweat stains. “Please, tell me that I’m not alone in this and there is something I can do.”
I told her that she may be suffering from something called hyperhidrosis, and that she may be surprised to hear that BOTOX® can actually help deal with the sweating. Hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating problems are caused by the nervous system. BOTOX® effectively blocks the impulses sent from the brain to the nerves that cause excessive sweating. Deodorants and antiperspirants control sweat by clogging the pores, but are not effective on people with hyperhidrosis.
Surgical treatments for hyperhidrosis include cutting out the sweat glands or cutting the nerves that lead to the glands. These surgical treatments can cause permanent scars and nerve damage. BOTOX® treatments for hyperhidrosis take 10 to 20 minutes. The treatment begins working within the first week and last for six to twelve months.
Where does the sweat go? Your sweat doesn't go anywhere or get backed up because the sweat simply is not produced in the areas treated with BOTOX®. Remember, the rest of your body is free to produce moisture normally.
If you think that you may be suffering from excessive underarm sweating, you can take a self-assessment test by visiting the official BOTOX® site. Click Here.
