CO2 Laser Resurfacing for Acne Scars

Posted by Brian Kerr on Nov 21, 2016 10:04:00 AM

One of the most effective treatments for patients with acne scars is the CO2 Fractional Laser.  C02 Laser resurfacing uses small columns of fractionated energy to ablate areas of damaged skin. Tiny wounds are made and the surrounding healthy skin helps with healing.

When the skin heals, it produces new collagen and the new skin is smoother, tighter and with less irregular pigmentation and scarring.

acne-scar-r-face.jpg

Although laser resurfacing can be very dramatic it is important for acne scar patients to realize that severe scarring can require multiple treatments. Many patients are satisfied with a single treatment while others benefit from a series of laser treatments. Recently, our medical assistant Kelly had a CO2 done for her acne scars. Here's what she has to say about her experience:

"I am one of those “lucky” people who suffer from acne scaring since my school days. Anyone that knows me knows how much my scars have affected me and make me feel insecure.  I was a chicken at first about getting the CO2 done but finally decided to go through with it and I wish I would of done this years ago. The first week I was very red and did not want to be seen in public, but it got better every day. By week 2 I was able to start wearing makeup. Now I am at week 3, very happy with my results, and feeling much more confident about the way that I look. I would definitely recommend this treatment to anyone" - Kelly, Boise

Fractional CO2 resurfacing can erase years and dramatically improve the appearance of scars, wrinkles and pigment, but it is not a lunchtime procedure. Downtime can be anywhere from several days to up to 2-weeks. During the healing process, the new skin is red and very dry at first, then pink then heals back to normal.

Burn Off The Doubt & Peel Through To Confidence. Getting Rid of Acne Scars with CO2 Laser

Posted by Kellie Mcmillan on Aug 23, 2016 12:07:37 PM

 By: Kellie McMillan

When we are young most of us go through an awkward stage in life. Whether its braces, “too short”, “too tall”, “too skinny”, “too fluffy”, or acne, those times can be hard and also mold us as individuals. It can make us strong later on, but mainly insecure. 6th grade was the first year I got my first red mound of pus, which turned into a face full of them. As I’d like to thank my dad for passing these lovely things down to me, we can’t really change our genetics can we? I thought of myself as “the creature from the unknown”.

I tried everything from antibiotics, skin treatments, specialized washes, to diets, and nothing worked. I missed out on a lot of things, because I was so insecure about myself. I finally got rid of my acne after high school when I discovered Accutane. As much as I am so happy that I got rid of my acne, now I was left with these awful scars that became apart of me.

Confidence is the sexiest thing a woman can wear, and my confidence was almost non-existent. Then I started working at Silk Touch Med Spa. I started learning about so many things in the skin industry. I never was interested in knowing too much about some of these things, because of the certain stigma that was created about cosmetic treatments, but after actually gaining the knowledge about these things we have available to us to make us feel better about ourselves, it changed everything I had ever thought negatively about it. It’s human nature to be bias when it comes to something we know little about. We tend to emphasize the negative to downplay the positive in the things uncharted.

That is when I found out about the CO2 laser resurfacing. I waited a whole year because I was a chicken, but after seeing what our patients experienced and how much it helped them I finally got on board to do it. We were originally going to just treat my cheeks where my scars were the worst, but then decided to just do my whole face since I was already going through the procedure. It not only helped my scars, it helped my overall texture and pore size. My skin feels the smoothest it has ever been.

co2_laser_boise.jpg

I will warn you, the first week is a little intense since you look like a giant scab. I did not want to be seen in public. By the second week I was red but able to put on a little make up to go out into the world. We tell everyone it’s a good 10 days of down time. You purge, you flake, and just have to be patient with it. Every month I saw more and more improvement. I am now 6 months out and happier than ever that I decided to do it.

I would recommend it to anyone who has ever had a similar insecurity. It’s time to be more open minded about things that can make us feel more confident. I’m in my 30’s and our 30’s are considered our prime time right?  It was time for me to inhale confidence and exhale doubt. Why not treat something to help me feel more confident than I ever have before!!!

Best Way To Get Rid of Age Spots

how to get rid of age spots

Why They Are Happening:

As we age, the skin can't repair itself as well as it once did. Damage can live under the skin for years before it starts to surface. When brown spots and age spots start popping up, they are nothing more than the effects of past sun exposure showing on the surface.

A digital Visia Skin Analysis can detect sun damage and age spots deep into the layers of the skin, before they surface. A proactive skin care regimen can help keep them from surfacing. If it's been over 6 months since you last Visia, or you've never had one, it's time! Claim a free one here

Prevention Tips

The number one way to prevent sun damage is daily use of sunscreen, even in the winter. Age/sun spots surface on the decollete and hands, too - so don't forget to lather those up as well.  Use a hat when you can and reapply sunscreen on hands and face every 90-minutes. We reccommend using a powder sunscreen for reapplying on top of makeup. Jane Iredale has a great powder SPF (available at Silk Touch).

Research shows that diet is also linked to age spots. Foods that can help prevent sun damaged skin include a high intake of olive oil, legumes, fish, vegetables and dried fruits.  The worst nutritional offenders in terms of premature aging are cakes and pastries, cordials, full fat milk, potatoes, red meat and soft drinks—which are all good foods to avoid in age spot treatment.

What is Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Posted by Sara Barrett on Feb 24, 2015 2:04:00 PM

What is CO2 Laser Resurfacing?

CO2 Laser skin resurfacing is the gold standard in laser skin treatments for the face, neck and chest. This procedure is one of our heavy-hitters –with absolutely amazing results from a one-time procedure.

Laser Skin Resurfacing improves the appearance of your skin by selectively targeting the superficial layers of the skin that contain wrinkles, scars and hyperpigmentation.

Co2 before and after photo silktouch

Fractional CO2 Laser - Boise, Idaho

Treatment is used to improve the following:

  • Pigmentation problems (especially brown pigment)
  • Age spots, sun spots and sun damage
  • Moderate to severe wrinkles
  • Textural irregularities
  • Lip lines
  • Acne scars
  • Surgical scars
  • Skin laxity (sagging skin)

C02 Laser Recovery

Because this is only a one-time treatment with major results, fractional laser resurfacing downtime is a little longer than our other facial procedures.   Right after the procedure your skin will probably appear red and slightly swollen, but this will fade within 2-5 days. For milder treatments, many patients are able to cover up the redness the next day and return to work or daily activities, but typically a return to make-up occurs around day 5.  Additionally, many patients experience some skin peeling within the first week after the treatment. Using a moisturizer will help reduce the appearance of flakey skin.

Downtime can be adjusted by the physician. We suggest scheduling a complimentary consultation prior to your treatment to discuss your individual treatment route and downtime.

CO2 Fractional Laser Cost

The cost of fractional laser resurfacing varies depending on what laser is used and the size of the area that is being treated. We would be more than happy to give you a personalized fractional resurfacing treatment plan and cost estimate during a consultation with one of our expert laser physicians.

This month only save $500 on a Co2 Face or Neck Treatment.

Best Treatments for Acne Scarring

Posted by Sara Barrett on Oct 16, 2014 10:29:00 AM

As if the emotional toll that acne exerts on its sufferers isn’t enough, scars left in its wake can serve as a daily reminder of days one would soon rather forget. Some acne can leave behind pitted indents in the skin that last a lifetime.

While this remains one of the more stubborn conditions to treat, aesthetic technology has made the battle with acne scars one we can win.

CO2 Fractional Laser and Acne Scar Treatment

Fractional CO2 laser resurfacing can erase years from your face and dramatically improve the appearance of acne scarring, wrinkles and pigment, but it is not a lunchtime procedure.

acne scar treatment boise

Fractional CO2 uses small columns of fractionated energy to ablate areas of damage. “Tiny wounds are made and the surrounding healthy skin helps with healing, making new collagen and elastin. It offers improvement in scarring, discoloration and wrinkles by stimulating collagen production.

The downtime with CO2 laser resurfacing can be lengthy, often 1 – 2 weeks. You’ll need to follow specific skin-care instructions and beware that your skin will go through some major changes during the healing process. However, this procedure is great for those who want big results in just one procedure.

This month we are running a special on CO2 – Buy a Face treatment, Get a Neck treatment for 75% Off. Claim this offer here.

Microneedling and Acne Scar Treatment

A less-aggressive treatment for acne scarring, with a lot less downtime is Microneedling. While you will need more treatments to see results, this non-invasive procedure is quickly becoming a client favorite here at Silk Touch.

acne scar treatment boise

This treatment uses multiple microscopic needles to penetrate the surface layers of skin – creating very small wound patterns to break old collagen chains and trigger the healing process to smooth the appearance of scars, wrinkles and stretch marks.

Most patients are very comfortable during the treatment. We use a topical numbing cream that remains on the skin for 30-40 minutes prior to the treatment. The feeling is similar to a rough exfoliation.

With Microneedling, patients will notice and immediate glow to their skin, but visible changes develop over the course of several weeks. Multiple treatments are needed for optimal results.

Is Your Neck Aging You? Secrets To A Youthful Neck

Posted by Sara Barrett on Apr 11, 2014 2:40:00 PM

neck lipo boise, neck lipo before and afteerSometimes we get so caught up focusing on the wrinkles on our face, that we forget that the signs of aging might be showing on our neck and décolleté area, too. Luckily there are ways to maintain a youthful looking neck – through prevention and damage reversal treatments.

Here are the proven ways to treat or get rid of discoloration, texture problems, weight gain, loose skin and wrinkles that evolve into the much dreaded “turkey neck”.

Neck Firming Creams

Nectifirm BoiseCreams and serums can provide an anti-aging arsenal that can help prevent signs on aging, and sometimes can help in reversing wrinkles and skin laxity. While there are a lot of products out there that claim to tighten and tone the neck, our favorite product is by Revision – Nectifirm. Nectifirm is the best product for the neck. Patients notice an immediate difference in tone, texture and firmness. It’s one of our best sellers and I wouldn’t go a day without it!

Skin Tightening

While creams can help with the signs and prevention of aging, sometimes in-office alternatives may be necessary. When it comes to skin tightening, you don’t have to go under the knife to see results. New technology such as the non-invasive VENUS FREEZE SKIN TIGHTENING can provide dramatic results with zero downtime. What is the Madonna Eye Treatment or "Madonna Lift"?

Posted by Sara Barrett on May 1, 2013 9:31:00 AM

What is the Madonna Eye Treatment?

The Madonna Eye is a new type of laser resurfacing. It utilizes a fractional CO2 laser using a light setting which creates tiny microscopic channels in the tissue so that new collagen can grow in to rejuvenate the skin. The Madonna Lift improves drooping skin, wrinkles and those telltale signs of aging around the eyes. This fractional CO2 laser technology has been used to perform a host of functions, including skin resurfacing and the treatment of acne scars. Now it can give men and women a younger look by rejuvenating the skin around your eyes including the eyelids.

smartxide clinical 29 1024x339

What does the Madonna Eye Treatment do?

It reduces the appearance of wrinkles and dark circles while tightening eyelid skin.

It works by utilizing a new fractional CO2 laser technology. Laser beam-like columns are created in the skin while leaving surrounding tissue intact. These beams eradicate damaged collagen and elastic fibers so that fresh skin with renewed elasticity can grow back in its place. Because only a "fraction" of the skin is affected, healing is very quick with minimal discomfort.

How do I know if I’m a candidate?

If you have wrinkles around the eyes, loose eyelid skin, crow’s feet, or dark circles, you are a candidate.

Will the laser work on darker skin?

In most cases, it works very well on darker skin. However, to be on the safe side, we do a test spot in the eyelid area first to be sure there is no change in pigmentation.

Do I have to stay out of the sun prior to laser treatment?

No. But one should wear a sunscreen after the Madonna Lift as is the case after any laser treatment.

How many treatments are needed?

The number of sessions depends on the individual changes present. On average, most people need between 3-5 sessions.

How long in between each treatment?

We usually space treatments at 2-4 week intervals

How many days of downtime?

Most people are a little red and puffy for 3-4 days. However, one can apply make-up right after the treatment to hide redness.

How long will the results last?

As new collagen is produced, we expect the results to last for at least several years. But as the technology is so new, it is difficult to be sure at this point.

Are there any other treatments and/or injectables I should be using to prolong my results (such as Botox)?

Botox can be injected after the Madonna Lift to help prolong the results. Long lasting fillers like Artefill are also a great addtion to the Madonna Lift. Artefill restores volumes while the Madonna lift opens the eyes, making the entire face more rejuvinated and younger looking.

During May, buy an Artefill Kit and get the Madonna Eye Lift at no additional charge.

CO2 Laser Resurfacing - Boise, ID

Posted by Sara Barrett on Jan 4, 2013 1:39:00 PM

Renew your skin in less than an hour in with Boise CO2 Laser Resurfacing. Dr. Brian Kerr of Silk Touch Med Spa wast the first to bring the Fractional CO2 Laser SmartXide DOT therapy to Idaho and we are thrilled to be ranked #1 in the service year after year.

Boise CO2 Laser Resurfacing helps reverse the appearance of aged and sun damaged skin. It also helps to:

  • Improve texture and firmness
  • Smooth wrinkles and lines
  • Reduce the appearance of acne and other scars
  • Renew your skin
  • Downtime is adjustable (Dr. Kerr or one of of certified staff members can work with you on how much laser resurfacing is needed)

At Silk Touch Med Sp and Laser Center, we use  SmartXide DOT C02 laser for our fractional laser treatments. This laser has been the #1 skin resurfacing tool for the past decade over peeling and other laser techniques, mainly due to the fact that it tighten the skin naturally, while stimulating increased collagen production. The result? Think of it like a mini face-lift without any incisions.

How Idaho Fractional Laser Resurfacing Works

With Idaho fractional laser resurfacing the laser beam is broken up or fractionated into many tiny micro beams  (DOTs!) which are separated so that when they strike the skin surface, small areas of the skin between the beams are not hit by the laser and left intact. These small areas of untreated skin promote a much more rapid recovery and healing with less risk of complications. The small areas treated by the fractional micro beams, called micro treatment zones, cause sufficient laser injury to promote new collagen production and resultant facial skin rejuvenation.

The results are phenomenal across the board. Take a look!

Laser Resurfacing Boise

CO2 Boise

What is a Boise CO2 Laser Resurfacing treatment like?

Each CO2 Laser Resurfacing treatment begins with understanding the patient’s desires and needs. Every new patient will sit down for a free consultation with our patient care coordinator. The laser settings Dr. Kerr chooses are determined by the problem the patient wishes to emphasize. While most treatments will improve both skin color and provide skin tightening or scar improvement, Dr. Kerr has the ability to emphasize one area over another. Superficial problems like pigment disorders or mild wrinkles are treated with close DOTs. Deeper problems such as scars or deep skin creases are treated with more distance between DOTs and fewer overall DOTs, greater depth and longer times with dwell times.

Patients whose primary concern is overall skin laxity and general wrinkling are treated between the two extremes. Treatments off the face generally use similar distance between the DOTs and depth settings as the face, but dwell times approximately one half the settings of facial treatments. Upper eyelids can be done with laser eye shields in place. The area is first covered with a topical anesthetic. The topical anesthetic is allowed to stay in place for about an hour. Using the topical anesthetic allows the SmartXide DOT treatment to be done with little discomfort. Immediately after having the procedure, the area we treated will feel hot. Therefore, we cool the area down with ice and a special cooler for about 30 minutes. Altogether, you should plan on about 2 hours for your Idaho C02 Resurfacing - SmartXide DOT treatment.

I love it when my friends and associates comment on how great I look. I would recommend this treatment over and over again…Thank you Dr. Kerr for the wonderful treatment!”

What is a C02 laser treatment?

Posted by Shannon Morgan on Jun 1, 2012 12:18:00 PM

The carbon dioxide CO2 laser has been the premier skin resurfacing tool for the past decade. Its primary advantage over peeling and other laser techniques is that it tightens the skin naturally, while stimulating increased collagen production. The results approximate that of a mini-face lift, without incisions.

silk touch med spa, C02 laser

CO2 laser resurfacing has been the “Gold Standard” for non surgical facial rejuvenation and removal of facial skin wrinkles and photo aging since 1995.  However, due to it’s power and complete removal of the skin, it requires intravenous or general anesthesia. It also has several limitations including a prolonged and difficult recovery period often lasting three weeks, prolonged facial redness that can last three months, hypopigmentation or lightening of skin color, and the potential for infection which can lead to scarring.

During the past five years new technology called fractional laser resurfacing has been developed which has dramatically shortened recovery time and lessened the occurrence of complications. With fractional laser resurfacing the laser beam is broken up or fractionated into many small micro beams  (DOTs!) which are separated so that when they strike the skin surface small areas of the skin between the beams are not hit by the laser and left intact. These small areas of untreated skin promote a much more rapid recovery and healing with less risk of complications. The small areas treated by the fractional micro beams, called micro treatment zones, cause sufficient laser injury to promote new collagen production and resultant facial skin rejuvenation.

Effectiveness is approximately 80 percent when compared to fully ablative CO2 and may require a second or third treatment, but the downtime is 3-5 days instead of several weeks to months

 C02 Fractional can help:

-   Reverse the appearance of aged and sun damaged skin

-   Improve texture and firmness

-   Smooth wrinkles and lines

-   Reduce the appearance of acne and other scars

-   Renew your skin

How do I get rid of my stretch marks - Boise?

Posted by Susan Kerr on Oct 11, 2011 11:01:00 AM

Stretch marks are annoying and can be difficult to treat. There are many factors to consider when trying to treat stretch marks. How much loose skin is there?  Is your body a collagen and elastin producing machine?  If you have too much skin, a doctor has a pretty easy call--you probably need surgery.  However, a doctor cannot always predict how much your skin will tighten because every person produces collagen and elastin at different rates.

stretch marks, skin tightening, Boise

Laser FOR STRETCH MARK REMOVAL

The Affirm laser is FDA approved to both tighten skin  and improve stretch marks. In the best case scenarios, we see tighter skin with improved tone, smoother skin texture, and flatter and softer stretch marks with increased tightness. Ultimately, the body has to do its job.  It has to be willing to produce collagen after being treated.  It can sometimes be difficult to predict who will get great results.  We have seen 60 year olds with results to make any client jealous and younger clients that haven't had the results we might expect.

How do lasers for stretch marks work?

Fractional lasers use a technology that creates injury to the skin by sending laser beams down into the skin (imagine aerating your lawn). The laser damages these narrow channels of tissue, leaving healthy skin surrounding these damaged narrow channels. This healthy skin helps the damaged tissue heal quicker. The thermal damage speeds up collagen and elastin production in the skin.

Does Treatment Hurt?

There is some discomfort with the treatment if an anesthetic is not used.  Simply applying an anesthetic cream on the skin about 45 min before treatment minimizes discomfort and patients are able to tolerate the treatment very well.

How long does the treatment take?

The actual treatment can take just a few minutes to treat individual stretch marks or 30-45 minutes to treat legs or abdomen that are covered with stretch marks.

How long does it take to recover?

Generally, most clients can walk out the door, put on makeup and be ready to go out that evening.  But it is always a good idea to give yourself one day to recover, as there can be some redness and swelling for several days.

How many treatments do I need?

Generally you need a series of treatments.  We usually recommend a minimum of four.  The results will not be immediate.  It takes time for collagen to be regenerated.  Patience is necessary with this treatment.

What is the cost of a stretch mark treatment?

Prices vary depending on the area treated and the number of treatments given.  One treatment can run as low as $50 for a small area to several hundred dollars for a package of treatments.

What can I do to prevent stretch marks?

Weight gain is one of the greatest factors that affect stretch mark formation.  Keeping weight stable during pregnancy and during one's life is important.  Topical creams like alpha-hydroxy acids or Retin-A medicines may help, but often heredity is a factor.  If your mom got stretch marks, you are more likely to get them as well.  So don't beat yourself up if you spread on the cream faithfully and still get stretch marks.

Always schedule a consultation with an experienced physician to discuss your specific case and learn more about available treatment options.
