"I don't look different - I just look good"

Posted by Sara Barrett on Feb 13, 2020 5:00:00 PM

I've received plenty of comments (both from my Instagram live videos and posts) about my more youthful appearance but I have to tell you: Getting Botox and fillers at Silk Touch Med Spa didn't make me look different, just a little better.

I work with Travis at Silk Touch and we’re not trying to change much just refresh my skin. I’m not the best at taking care of it and some of these steps like Botox and fillers remove those bags under my eyes. I’ve noticed this week just waking up, washing my face and rolling out. No bags.

Check out the before on the top and the after on the bottom:

Think about the last time you woke up sick, hungover or just under the weather. Remember that look in the mirror? Now, imagine waking up exactly the same, looking in the mirror and you look great. That's the effect these treatments have; you end up a better version of yourself. Make sense?

The effects were immediate. I had no real recovery but minimal bruising under my eyes. Nothing significant. No pain. It was all gone in a day and you probably wouldn't have noticed it unless you knew to look. Here's what the treatment looked like:

I'm definitely going to continue this journey with Silk Touch Med Spa. I’ve already told them to reserve a date. The fillers last for about 18 months. It doesn’t just go away and I shouldn’t need as much next time.

Why Everyone's Talking About PRP

Posted by Silk Touch Medical Aesthetics on Sep 16, 2019 9:26:00 AM

PRP is the latest buzzworthy beauty treatment - and it's all over social media. The Kardashian's love it, Angelina Jolie can't stop talking about it and bloggers everywhere are singing its praises. So what's the big deal?

PRP stands for Platelet Rich Plasma, and when it comes to anti-aging benefits, you can think of it as liquid gold. Like many aesthetic treatments - PRP was first used in the medical community. It is found in our blood, and the healing properties originated from research in wound healing and orthopedic research.

The treatment involves a technician drawing about 10mL of blood, centrifuging it to concentrate the blood plasma (the pale-yellow liquid component of blood that normally holds the blood cells in suspension) into a gel-like substance, then using it in an aesthetic treatment. The PRP jumpstarts your body’s healing mechanisms to stimulate skin recovery. There’s virtually no chance that your body will reject or react negatively to the injection, because it immediately recognizes the substance as its own cells.

PRP can be used in several ways:

  • PRP Injections: stand-alone treatments for the face. It helps stimulates new collagen, enhances microcirculation and regrowth of new healthy skin. The growth factors start working immediately, and the injected platelets are activated and release additional growth factors that accelerates the desired effects. It can take a few weeks to months to start seeing results, but they are extremely natural looking.
  • PRP with Injectable Fillers: This is one of the most popular methods, combining the volume replacement of injectable fillers with the skin-enhancing qualities of PRP. By directly injecting the PRP with the fillers, the full benefit of the PRP is delivered directly where it produces the maximal benefits.
  • PRP + Microneedling: also known as collagen induction therapy, or a Vampire facial, microneedling is a minimally invasive skin rejuvenation procedure using a device that contains fine needles. The SkinPen is programmable to puncture the skin thousands of times per minute in a highly controlled fashion – each puncture creates a micro channel that triggers the body to produce collagen and elastin to fill the channels.
  • PRP + Hair Restoration - PRP can also be injected into the scalp to help thicken the hair and repair the hair's natural growth process. It is also used during our NeoGraft Hair Restoration surgery cases.

Scientific studies dating back three decades have documented that PRP stimulates new collagen growth and can soften or even eliminate the visible effects of sun damage and aging in your skin. Wrinkles are diminished, scarring minimized, hollows plumped and skin texture smoothed. Most patients see an immediate improvement in their complexion and skin condition. But because the full, natural healing process takes time, results will appear gradually and progressively over a four to six week period.

Safety of Vaginal Rejuvenation Treatments

Posted by Silk Touch Medical Aesthetics on Aug 21, 2019 7:55:00 PM

FDA Advisory
Within recent weeks, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a statement saying vaginal rejuvenation treatments have been cleared for destroying abnormal or precancerous cervical or vaginal tissue, as well as condylomas (genital warts) and other serious genitourinary (GU) conditions—but not for disorders and symptoms related to menopause, urinary incontinence or sexual function. Furthermore, the Administration claims these treatments “have serious risks and don’t have adequate evidence to support their use for these purposes.”

FDA commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb says he is aware of “numerous” reports of vaginal burns, scarring, pain during sexual intercourse and recurring or chronic pain following these procedures and as a result, is asking the manufacturers of the devices in question to address their concerns and reevaluate the marketing of their products.

In light of this statement, we wanted to share with you what we and other industry experts think about the warnig.

Firstly, women seek these treatments for many health and aesthetic reasons both. Vaginal dryness, inability to climax, loss of sensitivity, urinary incontinence - and the list goes on! And we know it works because our clients have shared with us and we celebrated in the success of the results they see. Lasers and Radiofrequency devices have been used for these type of treatments for years, and have a large body of evidence showing unequivocal benefit to women's health. There have been very few and rare reports of burns and complications, and none so far at Silk Touch.

Secondly, this statement lumps all vaginal rejuvenation treatments into one category. Both lasers and Radiofrequency (RF) - which are very different technologies. We offer ThermiVa, a RF device which has less complications and downtime than laser treatments.

The reason these warning letters have been sent out is these devices are not supposed to be marketed for indications they are not FDA-cleared for until they receive approval, and this is where some companies have gone awry, leading to warning letters. Just because something doesn't have FDA-clearing, doesn't mean its unsafe. It's a costly and lengthy process to get something FDA-cleared, which is why its so common to get off label treatments. (Example, Botox in crows-feet, even though its FDA cleared for forehead.)

Here's an excerpt from NewBeauty magazine where Dr. Alexiades & Dr. Canter ( industry leaders in Vaginal Rejuvenation) shares her opinion.

"....these devices do work for many people and it’s important that the FDA is finally discussing women’s health issues after all these years. “The important take home messages are that women need treatments for conditions such as pain with intercourse, urinary leakage and infections, which can result in a poor quality of life,” says Dr. Alexiades. “Approximately 50 percent of postmenopausal women suffer from these conditions, and this new generation of devices offers significant efficacy and excellent safety profiles.”

Reston, VA urogynecologist Maria Canter, MD agrees. “Although I agree with the FDA that the safety and effectiveness of a device should be established prior to it being marketed a certain way, some patients have failed multiple ‘approved’ treatment options and have had significant improvement with energy-based devices. For example, a radio-frequency device I work with, Viveve System, has studies demonstrating safety and efficacy when used to treat vaginal laxity that can lead to decreased sensation during intercourse and urinary incontinence. There is also a prospective randomized controlled trial that was blinded and demonstrated significant improvement in symptoms. This device also currently has 2 FDA IDE trials. To date, there have been no serious adverse events and the benefits have outweighed any risk.”

To wrap it up...

While any FDA warning sounds scary - this one really is more of a warning to the companies to hold off on marketing certain benefits UNTIL they get FDA approval. We stand behind our vaginal rejuvenation treatment ThermiVa, in both the safety of the device and health benefits.

ThermiVa has truly been one of the most gratifying treatments to be able to offer to our clients. It has changed the life of countless women, and even improved marriages. We can't say enough good things about this treatment!

Ankle Liposuction- Cankles be gone!

Cankles can be very stubborn areas of the body to treat.  A person can be very fit, having no fat on other parts of their body....they just tend to hold on to fat around their ankles.   This may be due to heredity.  Dr. Kerr treated a client who actually had an amazing body....but just couldn't get rid of her cankles.  She could get her body fat down to 10%, but her cankles still hung around!

Smartlipo, Vaser, ankle liposuction, Dr. Brian Kerr, Silk Touch Med Spa, Boise

Dr. Kerr sculpted the ankles so that they would match the rest of her body! Here are her amazing Before and After Photos- Ankle lipo, Boise

Click here to see more Liposuction BEFORE AND AFTER PHOTOS:

New Beauty Magazine published an article June 13, 2011 on "The Cause and Cure for Ankles".   Here is an excerpt....

What are cankles? Cankles are fatty deposits that appear at the bottom of the where the leg and ankle meet. Instead of the leg tapering into a slim ankle, it continues in diameter, and there’s little distinction between where the leg ends and the ankle starts.

What causes them? When fat cells in the ankle area become engorged, there’s little room for them to expand, causing the ankles to appear swollen and fat, also known as cankles. But fat is not always the cause of them; muscle, edema, or swelling can all contribute. Genetic makeup also plays a role in fat that accumulates toward the lower end of the leg. Other cankle-causing factors include pregnancy (a lot of water is retained in the lower legs, ankles and feet), inflammation of the lymphatic system and kidney problems.

How do you fix them? Cankles can be treated surgically with liposuction in the inner and outer portion of the ankle. Although it’s a rare area to treat, it’s also a tricky one because of the amount of nerves that live at the base of the leg. The recovery is pretty lengthy due to the amount of time it takes for swelling to subside—like the knees, the ankles are far away from the heart, so it takes longer for the blood to recirculate, and the area tends to stay swollen longer.-- End of Article

This Transformation Tuesday highlights our Smartlipo Neck procedures. In this case, she wanted a tighter, more defined jaw line - a very common concern of both women and men. As we age, gravity takes it toll and the volume we once enjoyed in other areas of our face migrates down to the jowl area.

Smartlipo of the neck is a quick in-office procedure, with minimum downtime.  Brusing is very slight, and most people return to work within days of the treatment.

She is thrilled with her results! What do you think?

5 Laser Hair Removal Myths

Posted by Sara Barrett on Apr 9, 2019 12:48:00 PM

65 Laser Hair Removal Myths

Laser Hair Removal (LHR) has now become a common every day word.  20 years ago, back in 1999 when Silk Touch first introduced Laser Hair Removal, we were met with skepticism and disbelief.  "You mean you can really get rid of hair permanently?"

The answer to that question is a resounding YES.  Laser Hair Removal works. Thousands of clients have had the satisfaction of never having to shave again.
With that being said, there are some things we need to clear up.  Here are 5 Myths about Laser Hair Removal:

Myth #1:  Laser Hair Removal is completely permanent, FOREVER.

Answer:  Yes and No.  The FDA prohibits the advertisement of FDA-approved laser treatments to be described as a method of “permanent hair removal”. Hence, use of the term “permanent hair reduction” is used to describe the procedure.  In reality, many clients never have to shave again in certain areas of the body.  I had LHR 12 years ago on my legs, bikini line and underarms.  I DO not have to shave my underarms or bikini line, but there are finer blond leg left over from treatment years ago that I have to shave every few months.

Myth #2: All Hair types can be treated.

Answer:  No, not as effectively as dark haired individuals.  Today, most lasers target Melanin. Melanin gives colour to both hair and skin. Since the dark matter in hair follicles are the target, this procedure is best suited for dark haired individuals.

Myth #3:  Laser Hair Removal is painless.

Answer:  We all wish that were the case, but the fact is....even with lasers that add coolant or gel, it can be a little uncomfortable.  Look for a doctor who provides a topical anesthetic in additon to the coolant that the laser provides.  A machine called a Zimmer can help to cool the area and make this treatment much more comfortable.

We offer both numbing cream, and the Zimmer machine to make your treatment as comfortable as possible. Our most common comment from out patients “I was so surprised how much that DIDN’T hurt. You guys were fast!”

Myth #4:  Once gone, my hair will never grow back.

Answer:  For many, the hair never grows back.  Hair on the face (especially for women) can grow back or be difficult to get rid of in the first place.  Hormones, heredity and other factors can play a role in the permanent reduction of hair.  Hair treated with the laser will often grow back lighter, finer, and more sparse.  LHR treatments can delay growth.  Many clients need maintenance treatments on their face every year or two to keep hair at bay.  This can still be a much better option than the cost of waxing every few weeks.

Touch-ups if needed, are always offered at a much lower price.

Myth #5:  Laser Hair Removal is expensive.

Answer:  Compared to what?  Shaving everyday?  Buying new razors & shaving cream every month? Waxing?  Over time, Laser Hair Removal is much more cost effective than other procedures.  Your time alone is worth something.  If you shaved 10 min. a day (that's pretty conservative) for 10 years you will have spent 304 hours shaving!  And that doesn't count the cost of razors, shaving cream or the price of waxing. Treatments can start at $50 an area to several hundred for larger areas.

Just take a look at the infographic below to see how much you could save in a lifetime.

How To Tell If You Are A Kybella Candidate

Posted by Silk Touch Medical Aesthetics on Apr 2, 2019 2:31:00 PM

15_FACE.Kybella-2.jpg

Lately there has been a lot of buzz around this injectable treatment from the makers of Botox, Kybella. And it's easy to see why. It's an amazing treatment that gets some pretty wow worthy results for jawline contouring.

Kybella is the first and only FDA approved injectable treatment that gets rid of under-the-chin fat permanently with out surgery! The treatment takes about 15 minutes and while there is some slight tenderness and swelling, the downtime is very minimal. We have been using Kybella in our practice for a few years now and we can't get enough of this product! Not only can you use Kybella under your chin and in your jawline - but you can also use it on other areas of the body such as bra fat and banana rolls.

Are you a candidate for a Kybella double chin treatment? While we want to evaluate you in person first before we can say 100%... you can use this easy test to get a good idea!

Kybella Candidate Test:

1. Pinch the skin under your chin, then pinch the skin on your wrist - if it feels the same, then you a probably not a candidate.

3.Pinch the skin under your chin, then pinch the skin on your flanks (love handles). If it feels the same, then you are probably a candidate!

Check out some of our favorite Kybella before and after pictures below.

Tone Your Arms For Summer with LipoSculpture

Posted by Silk Touch Medical Aesthetics on Feb 15, 2019 2:43:00 PM

Many people try for months or even years to get more toned and contoured arms - but still the fat won't budge. Even people who are working out and doing everything possible to shape the arms can sometimes fail to get the results they want. Blame stubborn fat or even bad genetics - sometimes working out just won't get you the desired results you want. Unfortunately, some fat is just diet and exercise resistant.

Fortunately, Arm LipoSculpture or Arm Liposuction can help you get that toned, contoured look of well-shaped arms. It can remove the fat that is not responding to other methods. Dr. Brian Kerr of Silk Touch Med Spa, Laser & Lipo Center has performed hundreds of arm liposuction procedures with amazing results.

Arm Liposuction can:

- Get rid of fat under the arms

- Shape the upper or lower arms to look more toned and defined

- Help with excess skin and fat

- Get rid of arm fat behind the armpits and bra area

- Get rid of fat deposits located on the chest "bra fat"

Arm Liposuction is a one-day procedure that takes less than a few hours. Most patients are back to work in just a few days, and garments are worn for a limited amount of time to help with the healing process and further toning the arms. If loose skin is also an issue, arm liposuction can be paired with skin tightening treatments such as ThermiTight (which can be done on the same day) or a series of Non-Surgical Venus Freeze Skin Tightening Treatments post-procedure.

Who is a Good Candidate for Arm Liposuction?

If you have fat you can pinch on your arms or bra area - then most likely you are a candidate. While arm liposuction is permanent, fat can return if you continue gaining weight.

Are you a candidate? Schedule Your Free Consultation at Silk Touch Med Spa. During this free consultation we can go over your goals, give you an exact price for how much your treatment will cost, financing options and any other questions  you may have about the procedure.

Transformation Tuesday: Thigh Liposuction

Posted by Silk Touch Medical Aesthetics on Feb 5, 2019 2:18:00 PM

Thighs can be one of the toughest areas to slim down, especially after losing a substantial amount of weight. Like many lipo cases, this patient came to us wanting to slim her inner and outer thighs.  She was tired of the rubbing in between the inner thighs – and was ready for her pants to fit perfectly on both her waist and thighs.  Living with a pear shape since a young age, she was ready for a change.

Treatment: Smartlipo + Vaser Liposuction for Thighs

liposuction thighs before and after

Dr. Kerr used liposculpture to reshape the inner and outer thighs. This unique approach smooths out legs by removing fat – giving an over all shapelier, firmer and younger looking legs. This non-invasive liposuction can also help diminish the appearance of cellulite. When both inner and outer thighs are treated, Dr. Kerr can address the fullness under the buttocks to create not only attractive legs, but also improving the look of the buttocks.

Liposuction for the inner or outer thighs is a quick in-office procedure, with minimal downtime.  Most patients return to normal activity within 3 days.

The end result? Less jiggle, better-fitting clothes, and firmer thighs.
